Two great Independence routes

I created Kansas City Runner to share cool places to run and walk in the City of Fountains — particularly those near my home in Eastern Jackson County — with friends and fellow runners. Preparation for the recent Rock the Parkway Half Marathon (www.rocktheparkway.com) temporarily took me off topic, but this week’s post gets back to business.

I ran two great Independence routes last week. Both are well suited for walkers and runners alike.

The 1.5-mile Rock Creek Trail (www.connect.garmin.com/activity/embed/79900759) in western Independence connects Rotary Park at 10615 E. 24th St. South and Country Club Park at 2930 S. Norton Ave. You can learn more about the parks on pages 23 and 8 of the Independence Trail Guide at http://www.ci.independence.mo.us/userdocs/parksandrec/TrailguideWeb.pdf. The partly paved, partly gravel trail crosses several streets as it follows the scenic Rock Creek (http://ci.independence.mo.us/UserDocs/MapsPDF/Watersheds.pdf) for most of its distance.

Kate and Tom pose in front of the Rock Creek Trail Rotary Park Loop before our Sunday afternoon run.

If you find yourself in eastern Independence, check out the Medical Center Parkway Walking Trail. Page 18 of the Independence Trail Guide (http://www.ci.independence.mo.us/userdocs/parksandrec/TrailguideWeb.pdf) details the well-known route. For a nice 1.2-mile circuit, expand the quarter-mile trail tucked behind the former Medical Center of Independence as I did last week (http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/79070564′).

What memorable routes have you run or walked? Let us know — and tell us what you think of those mentioned here.

Happy running!
